Constitution Center Hosts Event Introducing Teens to the World of Voting

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The "Rock the Vote" campaign hit the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia today, giving area high school students an opportunity to gear up to vote for the first time.

Dozens of high school seniors from five Philadelphia high schools were able to register, learn more about voting rights history, and get a better vibe for the political process.

"Young people definitely do care," said Sam Casen, 18.

And many care about the cost of higher education, which could be right around the corner for them.

"I'm trying to be successful, and college is getting difficult, especially with these prices they have nowadays," said 17-year-old David, who is planning on registering in April.  "And it's only going to keep going up."

Maggie, a senior at Central High School in Philadelphia agrees.  "I don't want my financial issues to hinder my opportunity for success," she told KYW Newsradio.

"I definitely feel like unlocking the door of success, so I need that key," added Peter, who is already registered to vote.

The economy, taxes, health care, global warming, and gay marriage all came up during today's freewheeling town-hall-like meeting.  But even in a world of doubt, many remained optimistic.

"Your vote does count, especially at a local level where it's in your ward, it's in your division," said one young man.

"Individual people standing up for what they believe in. So I feel like my vote definitely does count," agreed a woman.
