Police say witnesses reported that a car driven by 19-year-old Lisa Banat of Mansfield was traveling south in the northbound lanes just before 4 a.m. Sunday.

They said Tuesday that Banat's vehicle struck a pickup truck head-on. The truck burst into flames.

Banat and the pickup's driver, 44-year-old John LaChapelle of Tiverton, R.I., were pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the pickup and the drivers of two other vehicles involved were injured but are expected to survive.

The investigation is continuing.
