Anaheim Residents Hold Vigil, Demand Answers Following Deadly Shooting

ANAHEIM (CBS) — Residents held a memorial Monday night for a man who was fatally shot by Anaheim police on Saturday afternoon.

Manuel Diaz was fatally shot in front of an Anaheim apartment complex following a foot chase. The 35-year-old known gang member later died at a local hospital.

"They can't call the cops now because they're afraid to call the cops," a resident told CBS2's Stacey Butler, referring to children in the neighborhood who say they are now afraid to call police for help.

On Saturday, at least three people were taken into custody in a near-riot after the shooting. The crowd threw rocks and bottles at police, and a police dog escaped from a squad car and bit several people.

"They lost control. They didn't handle the situation correctly," a resident told Butler.

A second officer-involved shooting took place Sunday night when police say another gang member shot at officers, prompting them to return fire.

"It's something that we're really concerned about because we can't really point to one cause for this type of violence," Sgt. Bob Dunn of the Anaheim Police Department said.

The District Attorney's office is conducting an investigation into the shootings, but Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait is also calling for an independent investigation.

"I believe we need to regain some trust that might've been lost," Tait said.

Three officers are now on paid administrative leave following the shootings and Anaheim Police Chief John Welter has apologized for the dog attack.

"We're not hiding anything," Welter said.

A community meeting is expected to be held at Anaheim City Hall at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
