Nearly 100 Words Added To American Heritage Dictionary
By John Ostapkovich
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Bible says there's nothing new under the sun, but this year's edition of the American Heritage Dictionary has a few exceptions.
The incoming class numbers about 100 new words, says the dictionary's Steve Kleinedler. Food and science are fertile fields of terminology, so when an international science panel named two new elements Flerovium and Livermorium, they were in.
"Most words are not so cut and dried. What we do is we look at a variety of evidence from across the country, whether a word is being used just within a particular segment or region of the country or whether it's become wide-spread, and whether or not we think it's going to stay around for a while, or be a flash in the pan."
Also added this time around are QR code (that pixelated box you can scan), the sharrow (symbol for a shared car-bike lane) and sriracha, a chili sauce.
