Second Suspect In Custody In Murder Of Officer Moses Walker, Jr.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia homicide detectives said on Sunday the second suspect in the murder of Officer Moses Walker, Jr. is in police custody in Montgomery, Alabama.

According to police, the suspect, 19-year-old Chancier McFarland, turned himself in to federal authorities at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. He had been on the run since the August 18th shooting in which Officer Walker was gunned down along Cecil B. Moore Avenue in North Philadelphia as he left his shift in the 22nd Police District in what police say was an attempted robbery. (Read related story)

"We had been tracking him, we knew he was in that area," said Captain James Clark. "We reached out to the family, they then reached out to us and said that he wanted to turn himself in. He called the local FBI out there and he turned himself in to them out there."

Police now have in custody both suspects in the murder of Officer Walker. Police locked up his alleged accomplice, 23-year-old Rafael Jones, on Wednesday.

"Both of them should rot in jail for the rest of their lives," said Mayor Michael Nutter. "And then rot in hell after that."

Jones is believed to have been the shooter.  He was officially charged with murder, robbery, conspiracy and related offenses on Friday. Authorities had been looking for McFarland ever since. (Read related story)

Detectives had said it was just a matter of time until they tracked him down. Mission accomplished.

The announcement came amid a solemn procession as Officer Walker's casket was carried on a horse-drawn caisson to the Deliverance Evangelical Church where his public viewing was to be held. (Read related story)

Captain Clark delivered the news to Walker's mother just moments before his viewing started.

"It's very nice that we're able to give the family some sense of closure and have both of them arrested before the burial," Clark said. " So yes, it's very nice."
