Suspect In Bronx Double Murder Apparently Killed Self In Florida
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The manhunt for a suspect wanted in a double murder at a Bronx hotel came to a deadly end.
Joseph Kernizan, 42, shot and killed himself Tuesday night in Miami, Fla. as authorities closed in on him, CBS Miami reported.
Kernizan was wanted in the murders of his ex-girlfriend Tracy Bennett, 38, of Elmont and reggae singer Wayne Hamilton, 50, of Milwaukee, Wis.
Bennett and Hamilton were shot to death just after 3 a.m. Saturday at the Holiday Motel on the New England Thruway in Eastchester.
Kernizan, who managed a Haitian music group, reportedly began stalking Bennett when he found out she was having an affair. Saturday evening, he allegedly followed her to the Bronx motel, where she was meeting up with her alleged lover, Hamilton, a popular reggae singer, CBS Miami reported.
Kernizan is the father of Bennett's two young children and she had taken out a court order of protection against him, D'Auria reported.
Kernizan had several previous arrests, including at least one for violating the order of protection, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.
