Amaro: 'I'm Not Necessarily Disappointed'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- 37 players were traded on 12 deals, involving 18 teams, on Thursday before the 4:00pm E.T. Major League Baseball trade deadline. None of those teams were the 48-61 last-placed Philadelphia Phillies.
"I'm not necessarily disappointed," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said right after the deadline. "I'm more surprised that there wasn't more aggressive action from the other end. We have some pretty good baseball players here. Our goal all along was to try to improve the club and there really wasn't a deal to be made that would help us do that."
The Phillies had a ton of valuable commodities, but many had expensive contract. Amaro says money was not the reason a deal wasn't made on Thursday.
"Money wasn't going to be an impediment for us, it was trying to get the right baseball deal," Amaro said. "We weren't going to let money impede that. My feeling is if we had an opportunity to improve the club with the type of talent we wanted to get back, then we would have made a move."
Of course, Amaro and the Phils can make deals in August if their players clear waivers. However, as if things couldn't get any worse, the Phillies most-valuable post-deadline player Cliff Lee, injured his arm in Thursday night's game and has been placed on the 15-day DL. His season may be over.
