Work Begins Monday To Improve Bear Cut Bridge Traffic Flow

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Residents of Key Biscayne and Virginia Key will soon find it a little easier to get to the mainland.

Beginning Monday, the county's public works department will begin minor improvements to the roadways on either side of the Bear Cut Bridge, in order to help traffic flow more smoothly.

Work will take place exclusively at night, from approximately 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. It's scheduled to be complete by Friday, January 18th, if the weather cooperates.

The work includes paving over parts of the median on both sides of the bridge to create a smoother transition for the maintenance of traffic. Once completed, this work is expected to improve traffic flow onto and off of the bridge.

The westbound lanes of Bear Cut Bridge are closed for necessary repairs.  The move came after a Florida Department of Transportation report claimed the side of the bridge is in serious disrepair.  The problems concern the bridge's steel beams, or girders, which have corroded.

Currently all westbound traffic is being diverted to an eastbound lane which has turned the bridge into a two lane road.

The major reconstruction is expected to take about a year.
