Man Falls 43 Feet From University Of Michigan Dorm Window

ANN ARBOR (WWJ/AP) - Police say they're investigating how an 18-year-old fell several stories last month from a window at a University of Michigan dorm.

The man was reportedly visiting friends on the Ann Arbor campus and suffered significant injuries in the Nov. 18 fall, but since has been released from a hospital.

The man, an Ohio resident whose name wasn't released, fell from Mary Markley residence hall -- which is built into a hillside with part of the building below ground level.

Police estimated that the man fell about 43 feet from a window on the dorm's sixth floor. Officials say he was apparently on the ground for several hours before being found.

Investigators say it's not clear if the man had been drinking or using drugs prior to the fall, but other people were in the room sleeping when the incident happened, sometime between 4 and 7 a.m.

The residence hall is the same building where freshman Courtney Cantor fell to her death in 1998 from a sixth-floor window.

While police weren't able to determine exactly what happened, they believe that Cantor, who was drinking earlier but not legally drunk when the accident occurred, was trying to open or shut the window when she fell out.

After Cantor's death, the university installed devices designed to keep the windows, which open out, from opening all the way, AnnArbor.com reported.
