New York Area Vineyards: A Guide To The Best Local Wine

Lucky for us New Yorkers, you can find some of the nation's oldest vineyards in our home state. In fact, the French Hugenots planted the first vines in the Hudson River Valley in New Paltz (now part of Ulster County) in 1677. Plus the nation's oldest continuously operated winery, Brotherhood, opened in 1839 in Washingtonville.

Not only can we brag about history, but this state also has hundreds of wineries to choose from. New York wineries produce millions of bottles of wine every year, making it the nation's third-largest wine producer behind California and Washington. Many of these offer wine tours and even tastings.

On Long Island, you can take in a visit to a nice beach as well as a vineyard. Thanks to the large bodies of water and the moderate temperatures, this area is blessed with a long growing season and perfect conditions for mouth-watering merlots, chardonnays and other European classics. Another option is to hop on Metro-North at Grand Central and stop in Hudson Valley. This section of New York State is a great getaway from the everyday rush of the city. Just a mere 45 minutes on the train, you will find yourself in the middle of beauty. The Hudson River features one of America's most historic wine regions.

More than 20 wineries occupy this region, specializing in Seyval Blanc and Baco Noir, as well as Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. On either side of the river, you'll find wine trails: the Shawangunk Wine Trail and Dutchess Wine Trail. For more information, check out www.newyorkwines.org.
