Connecticut DMV Changing Driver's License Renewal Procedures For Identity Verification

HARTFORD, CT (AP / WCBS 880) - The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles says residents will have decide whether to take an extra step and have their identify verified the next time they renew their driver's license.

Commissioner Melody Currey unveiled plans for the new SelectCT ID on Thursday. The program, which begins on Oct. 3 and continues over the next six years, stems from new federal standards in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

People renewing their license or DMV-issued identification card will have to show documents to establish an historical record of their identity.

She told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau drivers should head down to their DMV office and bring a birth certificate or a passport, a Social Security card, and two pieces of mail to confirm their present address.

In return, they'll get a gold star on their license, which will make it easier for them to get into federal buildings or onto airplanes.

People who decline will receive a license that will be stamped "not for federal identification.''
