Kids Attempt Jumping Jacks Record

ST. PAUL (WCCO) -- When you think back to playing sports as a kid or going to gym class, it seems like jumping jacks were always involved.

On Tuesday morning, a group of children are going to try to help set a record in cooperation with First Lady Michelle Obama.

Highland Park Elementary School first-grader Lizzie Hamill first read about the "Let's Jump" campaign in her National Geographic Kids magazine, and took the idea to her principal and gym teacher.

She said she wanted to be a part of the record attempt "because I think jumping jacks are fun."

Hundreds of students in the Twin Cities will be jumping for the world record. They will have to jump for one minute straight without stopping for their jumping jacks to count.

"I can't even tell you how pleased I was when she brought this to me. I hadn't heard about it, and she's pretty excited about it," said physical education instructor Judy Ryder.

The record attempt will happen at 2 p.m., but Hamill has already helped her fellow students train for the big moment.

The "Let's Jump" campaign is part of Michelle Obama's effort to curb childhood obesity. It's one of many things the students at Highland Park have been involved in to promote exercise.
