Plainfield Police Officer Accused Of On-Duty Sex Offense

PLAINFIELD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A 41-year-old Plainfield police sergeant is accused of assaulting a woman while he was on duty last summer.

Samuel Woody, a 12-year veteran of the force, was arrested Tuesday night and charged with criminal sexual contact, Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow said.

Investigators said Woody was on duty and in uniform when the alleged assault occurred on July 24, 2011.

The incident was reported to authorities three weeks ago, Romankow said.

Woody was released from custody after posting bail.

He has been suspended from the force.
