NYPD: Father Killed, 5-Year-Old Son Wounded In Bronx Shooting
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A father and his five-year-old son were shot, the father fatally, in the Bronx Tuesday afternoon.
Police responded to reports of a shooting near the corner of E. 170th Street and Webster Avenue in the Claremont section shortly after 4:30 p.m.
The pair was found in the sixth-floor stairwell of a nearby apartment building, according to police.
Medics rushed the child to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the arm.
The 29-year-old father, identified as Jaquan Millien, suffered a gunshot wound to his torso. He was rushed to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center where police say he was pronounced dead.
Distraught family and friends lit candles at a nearby apartment building where the victim lived. They say Millien had just picked his son from school when the two were shot in the building stairwell at the Butler Houses.
Officers rushed upstairs and found the child bleeding in the hallway. They applied pressure to the wound - while Lieutenant Eric Dym applied his training as a U.S. Marine veteran to the serious situation.
"I removed my belt from my waistband and provided a tourniquet to his arm," Lt. Dym told CBS2's Jessica Layton. "He was very calm. We were rubbing his head and telling him that he'll be OK. He was very brave. We were very impressed."
No arrests have been made as investigators continue to probe what led to the shooting.
