Former Sutter Roseville nursing assistant who stole from elderly patients sentenced to jail, probation
ROSEVILLE — A former nursing assistant at Sutter Roseville Medical Center was sentenced to 200 days in jail and two years of probation for stealing cash and credit cards from three elderly patients, officials announced Monday.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta made the announcement and also said the former nursing assistant, Shekira Thompson, was ordered to pay restitution to the victims and can no longer work as a caregiver in a facility that primarily focuses on caring for elderly or other dependent people.
Thompson had pleaded guilty to two charges of felony theft from an elder or dependent adult and one count of misdemeanor theft from an elder or dependent adult.
Bonta said the crimes happened in November and December 2022 and involved three patients who were directly under her care. She used the victims' credit cards at various places, including a nail salon, wig store and a shopping mall — ultimately charging more than $2,000 to those cards.
"Healthcare providers have a profound responsibility to treat their patients with the highest level of compassion and dignity," Bonta said in the announcement of the sentencing. "They support individuals during some of the most challenging moments in their lives."
