A teen boy has died in the hospital after going missing in the Mokelumne River in Lodi, officials said Thursday evening.

CBS Sacramento watched as first responders placed the boy's body on a stretcher. The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office confirmed the body was recovered shortly after 6 p.m. that day and initially said the boy had died.

However, around 7 p.m., the sheriff's office sent out an updated press release that said the boy was in the hospital in an unknown condition.

The San Joaquin County Medical Examiner confirmed Monday that he had died. He was identified as 14-year-old Sacramento resident Ivan Holmes.

The City of Lodi said he was swimming in the Mokelumne River near Lodi Lake when he went missing. Lodi police said it received the initial call for assistance around 4:45 p.m. when the teen went underwater and never resurfaced.

Lodi police said officers arrived at the river within minutes, followed by fire department personnel and sheriff's units.

Law enforcement officials said that civilians were helping with the search, and a dive team and aerial unit responded to assist.
