Police searching for alleged shooting suspect in New Castle
Police in New Castle are searching for a man accused of shooting another man on Sunday evening.
The New Castle Police Department says that 29-year-old Alexander Minnich is accused of shooting another man with a rifle on Sunday evening along Butler Avenue.
"I'd consider him extremely dangerous," said New Castle Police Chief David Cumo.
The man who was shot was taken to a hospital in Youngstown, Ohio, according to police.
The victim told police his roommate, later identified as Minnich, shot him during an argument and was still inside the home.
Following the shooting, police say officers surrounded the home where they believed Minnich may have been.
"At that point, they surrounded the house and were trying to hail him over the loudspeaker. No one came out, they didn't make any contact, so they called the CIRT team, which is the SWAT team."
Officers made their way into the home, but Minnich wasn't there, police said.
Hours later, detectives got a search warrant for the home where they say they recovered a handgun, two rifles, ammunition, and two shell casings.
"We're continuing to look, we believe it's a good possibility he may still be in the area, but we don't know that for sure," Cumo said.
Police say that while the standoff was ongoing, the suspect's father called to say his son called him and asked him to pick him up from a local Dollar General. Police responded, but didn't locate Minnich.
Anyone with information about Minnich or where he may be is asked to call the New Castle Police Dispatch Center at 724-656-9300.
Police say Minnich will be facing charges, including attempted homicide, and should be considered armed and dangerous.
